(KTLA 5)-A shooting that left one man dead, a second man wounded, and a child struck by shattered glass outside a liquor store in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood Sunday night was determined to be gang related, the Sheriff’s Department said Monday.
Detectives responded to a “gunshot victim” call in the 1700 block of East Firestone Boulevard (map) in the South L.A. Area at about 8:25 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.
Arriving deputies found two men suffering from gunshot wounds at the location.
A 60-year-old black man had been struck multiple times in the lower leg and a 19-year-old black man had been shot once in the upper body, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Both were taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where the 60-year-old was pronounced dead, the news release stated.
The 19-year-old, who investigators said was a member of a local street gang, was treated for his injuries and was expected to survive.
According to witnesses, the two shooting victims were talking on a sidewalk in front of the liquor store when two people walked up and started shooting at them. The shooters, described only as African American, then ran off in an unknown direction, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
A stray bullet from the shooting also struck a car with three people inside that happened to be driving by at the time.
The bullet did not strike anyone in the car but caused the rear window of the vehicle to shatter, cutting a 4-year-old boy who was hit by fragments of glass. according to the news release.
The boy was taken to a hospital and was treated for a minor laceration to his scalp.
The two gunmen were still outstanding and no weapon has been found in the shooting, which was believed to be gang related, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
